This article discusses how to create a new project. Learn more about Filevine projects. To create or edit a project template, read the Customs Editor article.
Permission Required
To create a project, you must have the Project Creation permission, which can be granted in the Advanced Access tab.
Creating a New Project
To create a new project, follow these steps. Be careful when choosing the project information, as most of this information cannot be reassigned.
- Click the main menu > New Project. Select the main menu in the top lefthand corner and select New Project from the dropdown. A new project can also be created by clicking on + New Project in the top right corner of the Project Hub.
- Choose the Org and project type. Select the “Choose an Organization” field, if prompted, and select the desired Org from the dropdown. Select the “Choose a Project Type” field, if applicable, and choose the desired project type from the dropdown.
-
Search for or create the main project contact. Search for the project contact for the case in the contacts field. As you type the name, contacts already in Filevine will appear in a dropdown. This field’s search can be limited by default to a contact type. To remove this limit, deselect the Limit to [type] in the search dropdown.
Create a new contact by clicking + Add Person in the dropdown or by clicking the new person icon to the right of this field. A contact card will open; fill out the card and hit Save.
- (Optional) Create the Project Name. The project will automatically be named by the name of the client. If you’d like the project to have a different name, enter your desired project name in the “Project Name” textbox. You can add or edit the project name at any time.
- (Optional) Add a team. If desired, you can search for and select a team of users to add to the project. Only one team can be added during this step, but you can add additional teams after the project is created if desired.
- Click Create.
The Org and project type cannot be changed once the project is created. If you have created a project with the wrong Org or project type, you’ll need to create a new project with the correct setup. Then, copy over any data that was entered into the original case, and archive the original project.
You may also consider giving it a project name with the word "duplicate" for any reports of archived projects that it may appear in, and using the project tag #trash.
Heads Up!
If you have chosen the incorrect contact for a project, do not edit the contact in the contact card (unless it is a newly-created contact). Instead, follow the steps in the Project Contact article to change the project contact.
