Here, you’ll learn how to chat in the LOIS Console, including how to focus and refine your requests as well as the different types of citation and output LOIS provides.
This article covers building prompts from scratch. For more information about building skills, read LOIS Build.
LOIS Glossary
First, we’ll define some terminology used in the LOIS Console. In the subsequent sections, you’ll see these items used in the context of walkthroughs and examples.
| sidebar | The left side panel in the LOIS Console. The sidebar contains your chat history, the Build option, the New Chat option, and your profile. |
| chat panel | The main piece of the LOIS Console, where you’ll have conversations with LOIS. |
| prompt or input | The text you type or dictate to LOIS. |
| response or output | The text and citations LOIS provides to you. |
| project picker | The Choose a project option, which you can use to select a specific Filevine project. This option allows LOIS to narrow its focus and dig deeper into a single project. |
| refine focus | When a specific project is selected, you can use this option to select only certain project documents for LOIS to focus on. |
| starter prompts | Four prompt types appear below the input area. Click these options to select and enter a pre-written prompt into LOIS. |
| action citation | If it performs an action in Filevine, LOIS will include a citation in its response. Each citation includes the prompt, a brief note on the action, and a link to the item in Filevine. |
| document citation | If LOIS uses project documents, it will include in-line citations of its sources in its response. Click on a citation to open a right side panel, where you can view the source document, with the relevant text highlighted. |
| document editor | If LOIS drafts new content, that contact can be viewed and edited in the document editor. |
1. Open a new chat
In the LOIS Console, you’ll see the main screen—the chat panel—and the sidebar, which will list your chat history. You’ll also see the option to Build here, which allows you to use skills and workflows—learn more.
In the sidebar, you can click New Chat to open a new chat in the chat panel, the main part of the screen.
2. Provide the input and scope
Type your prompt in the input area, or use the microphone icon to dictate your prompt to LOIS.
Starter Prompts
For help getting started, try the prompt options provided beneath the input area.
Click on any option to view a short list of sample prompts. Click a prompt to input and submit that prompt.
Scope Selection
Depending on your prompt, you also have options for narrowing the focus of LOIS. Use the Choose a project option if you want to dig deeper into a single project, or look for a specific project’s documents.
If you’ve chosen a project, you’ll see the option to Refine focus. Click this option to view a list of project documents, and select specific project documents to narrow the focus of the response.
For example, if you wanted LOIS to summarize the key counterpoints of a complaint, you could select the complaint and the answer to the complaint from the project documents.
3. LOIS Responds
LOIS thinks through how to respond to your prompt. You will see it thinking through different steps and approaches.
LOIS then provides a response. Depending on the input, LOIS may provide a drafted document, citations to document sources, or citations to the actions it performed in Filevine.
Document Citations
If LOIS includes document citations, you can click on the in-line citation or on Sources at the end of the response to open the list of citations and view the source document, where the reference information is highlighted.
Action Citations
If the response includes action citations, you’ll see the list of actions taken in Filevine. Click Open on an action citation to open the item in Filevine. If there are many actions, you can click View all to view all actions on the right.
Document Editor
If your request involves drafting content—for example, drafting a demand letter—LOIS will draft the content using the document editor. Click on the item in the response to open the document editor, where you can view and edit the content, including basic formatting.
To save or download the document, click the vertical ellipsis menu and choose from the following options:
- copy to clipboard
- print/save as PDF
- download as .docx
- attach to Filevine
Attaching the document to Filevine will save the document as a .docx file to the chosen project. You can find the document in the project’s Docs section, titled LOIS-Console-[name given in LOIS].
Tip
Use the document editor in conjunction with other LOIS products, like LOIS for Word. LOIS can draft a contract in the LOIS Console, and LOIS for Word can refine and check the document.
4. Follow Up
Continue the conversation with LOIS. LOIS may request additional information from you in its response, or you may request further information or action based on the response.
