The knowledge engine that powers LOIS's retrieval is continuously being improved, but it won't always get it right on the first try.
Why Am I Not Getting the Answer I Want?
LOIS is designed to ground every response in your actual case data, using information from your Filevine projects to give you accurate, sourced answers. This makes hallucination— where an AI confidently makes something up—much less of a concern with LOIS than with general-purpose AI tools.
Instead, when LOIS gets it wrong, it's usually a retrieval issue. LOIS answers questions by searching your case data and pulling the most relevant information into its response. When an answer misses the mark, it's most often because LOIS didn't retrieve the right content, not because it invented something.
Scope of Context
LOIS retrieves from the sources it has access to. If the information you're looking for lives outside those sources, LOIS won't be able to surface it, regardless of how the question is asked.
When in doubt, check whether the relevant content exists in your project and is in a format LOIS can read.
Case Law Questions
When you ask about legal precedent, decisions, or case law, LOIS can pull from the web in addition to your project data. To ensure accuracy and reliability, web sources are limited to a carefully vetted set of trusted legal sources. If LOIS can't find what you're looking for on a case law question, the source you have in mind may be outside that scope.
You can try asking in a more general way or referencing the legal principle rather than a specific source.
What Can I Do?
If LOIS gives you an incomplete or unhelpful answer, you can try:
- Rephrasing your question: a slightly different way of asking can sometimes surface different or better results.
- Narrowing the scope: if your question is about a specific document or folder, try attaching that document or folder to LOIS before submitting your query
- Asking LOIS to go deeper: If the answer feels incomplete, follow up in the same conversation, and ask LOIS to elaborate, look in a specific place, or try a different angle. LOIS can refine its response based on your follow-up.
- Being specific about entities and timeframes: the more context you give LOIS (names, dates, record types) the better it can target the right information
Tip
If LOIS consistently can't answer something you'd expect it to know, use the thumbs down button to flag the response or reach out to support at support@filevine.com.
