In Depositions by Filevine, LOIS provides actionable insights about your transcripts in an AI-assisted, conversational format. Instead of combing through individual transcripts on your own, use LOIS to analyze multiple transcripts at once.
After selecting the desired transcript(s), you can request feedback on deposition tactics, identify patterns or contradictions in deponents’ responses, get help with strategy, and more. LOIS can also help you get started on next steps, like drafting impeachment outlines or internal job aides based on the selected transcripts.
This article discusses how to navigate the Ask LOIS panel, choose source transcripts, and manage chat history in Depositions by Filevine.
Panel Navigation
The LOIS icon appears in the righthand panel menu when viewing cases and proceedings, or while using the transcript toolkit. Click the icon to open the Ask LOIS panel.
In the panel, you can either start a new chat with LOIS or view your chat history. Continue reading the remaining sections to learn more.
New Chat
Follow these steps to begin chatting with LOIS.
Choose Sources
In the text box along the bottom, click Sources to select the transcript(s) you want LOIS to reference in chat.
In the modal, some transcripts may be auto-selected, depending on where you opened the Ask LOIS panel. For instance, when viewing a case, all available transcripts in the case are selected. When using the transcript toolkit, the transcript you’re currently viewing is selected.
Select or unselect transcripts to respectively include or exclude them from chat. Proceedings without a transcript display “No transcript” in parentheses and cannot be included in chat.
To include transcripts from another case, click Add more transcripts. In the “Search by case or deposition name” field, search for and select the desired transcript(s) to include. Each search result displays the proceeding’s name and parent case. Click Add.
When finished, click Confirm. The text box in the Ask LOIS panel will display an updated source count.
Enter a Prompt
Once you’ve selected the desired transcript source(s), simply type the prompt or question you’d like to ask in the text box. Click Ask LOIS.
Ask any questions regarding your transcripts—you can make further requests to refine the results. For inspiration, take a look at the following sample requests.
Ask LOIS for insights regarding your attorneys or opposing counsel:
- Based on the attached depositions taken by (attorney), which deposition style has worked best for her?
- Write me a playbook of opposing counsel’s deposition style/tactics based on the questions they’ve asked in the attached transcripts.
- All of the attached depositions were defended by the same opposing counsel. Based on his dilatory tactics, what rules and/or case law should I have prepared to refer to?
- In the attached transcripts, analyze the objections—and the questions being objected to—and look for any patterns or hidden meaning behind these objections.
Ask to compare witness’ testimonies and spot contradictions:
- Where in these transcripts do the experts agree on the details of x, y, z?
- In the two depositions attached, where are the biggest disagreements?
- In the attached depositions, where has this expert used similar or identical terminology to describe or explain something?
- Help me write an impeachment outline for the upcoming deposition of (witness) based on the attached transcripts.
Ask for insights about “frequent flyer” parties:
- In the areas of x, y, and z, has the expert deposed in the attached depositions flip-flopped on any testimony?
- Find me the canned/rehearsed responses within these depositions related to the same defendant.
Ask for help gathering reference material for internal analytics and training:
- Analyze these 6 depositions taken by (attorney) and determine the biggest strengths and weaknesses.
- In the attached transcripts, identify the most effective questioning methods and create a list of best practices based on your findings.
- In the attached depositions, extrapolate all of the safety rules questions.
- Evaluate the attached depositions for efficiency. Which questions or tactics were least effective, and what could we do differently in the future?
