Users can connect the LOIS Console with their iManage account to search and retrieve their stored documents. Search your firm's documents in plain language, read a document and ask questions about it, and draft from past work without switching windows.
Heads Up!
The connection works with iManage Cloud only. Users cannot connect LOIS to locally-hosted iManage accounts.
Overview
The iManage connector allows the LOIS Console to do the following:
- Search, retrieve, and summarize iManage documents. Use plain language to search for a document, retrieve its text, and ask questions about its contents, properties, and version history.
- Use iManage documents to create drafts and audit citations. Use templates and matter documents in iManage to draft new documents in the console. Ask LOIS to verify the citations in a filing stored in iManage.
- Save generated summaries and drafts to the Filevine project. After referencing iManage documents to generate a draft, summary, or analysis, Filevine customers can save the resulting artifact(s) to the relevant project.
However, the connector has the following restrictions in place:
- The connection is read-only. Documents do not “sync” between iManage and LOIS, and LOIS cannot create, edit, move, or delete documents in iManage.
- iManage provides the text, not the files. LOIS cannot access the original PDF or Word document in iManage—only the words contained in the document. Formatting, images, and e-signature pages are not visible to LOIS, and page numbers may not line up.
- LOIS has the same access as the user. LOIS only sees what the user’s iManage account can access, so your firm's existing permissions and security controls stay in place.
Setup
To allow users to connect with iManage, an Account Admin can click Build in the sidebar of the LOIS Console. Select Connectors, and then select the Firm tab. Next to the iManage connector, click Enable.
Once enabled, each user can connect their own iManage account in the Personal tab of the Connectors section. Next to the iManage connector, click the plus button. In the window that appears, sign in using your iManage credentials.
Permission Required
The first user in your organization to sign in to iManage will typically see an error after their first login attempt. An iManage administrator can resolve this error by approving Filevine in the iManage Control Center. After this one-time approval step, the user will be able to sign in successfully.
To learn more, read the iManage article: Reviewing pending approvals for MCP clients.
Once you successfully sign in, the iManage connector will display a Connected status chip.
Disable Connection
Users can disable their individual connection to iManage by clicking the ellipsis icon ⋯ next to the iManage connector and selecting Disable. In the confirmation modal, click Disable again to confirm.
The user will no longer be able to search and chat with iManage document text via LOIS, but documents will remain unchanged in iManage.
In the Firm tab, an Account Admin can disallow all users from connecting with iManage by clicking the ellipsis icon ⋯ next to the iManage connector and selecting Disable. In the confirmation modal, click Disable again to confirm. This action will disable all active user-level iManage connections and prevent new connections.
Use
You can ask LOIS about iManage documents the same way you would make any other request. For inspiration, take a look at the following example prompts.
Tip
For the best results, make sure your prompt includes the name of the matter as it appears in iManage.
Find and Read
- Search iManage for the Delgado matter.
- What matters do we have in iManage for client 10412?
- Find the police report in the Delgado matter and tell me who was at fault.
- What are the total medical expenses in the Delgado file and how much is still outstanding?
Analyze Matter Files
- Import the deposition from the Delgado matter in iManage so I can chat with it.
- Import the medical records from the Delgado matter and build me a treatment timeline. Flag any gaps and tell me what caused them.
- What is the biggest weakness in this case, and what do we have to answer it?
- Check our discovery responses against the medical records in iManage. Does anything not line up?
Note
As a reminder, “importing” a document from iManage simply lifts the text from the document for LOIS to view and analyze. The document itself remains unchanged in iManage.
Create Drafts
- Use the demand letter from the Pham file as the template and draft one for Delgado from the records.
- Draft a response to this motion using our past filing as the model for structure and tone.
- Pull every case citation out of this filing and resolve each one to the opinion it cites.
Note
As a reminder, the connector disallows LOIS from creating or editing the documents in iManage. You can draft within the console, and then either download the file or save it to Filevine, if applicable.
