Users can connect Claude with LOIS to ask questions about the documents in a Filevine matter. Ask a question in plain language, get an answer drawn from the matter's documents, and keep working without switching to the LOIS Console.
Permission Required
The connector requires the LOIS product on the user's account in Account Manager. Having Filevine alone is not enough.
Overview
The LOIS Claude Connector allows Claude to do the following:
- Answer questions from the documents in a matter. Ask about medical records, depositions, filings, or anything else in the matter, and LOIS searches the documents and answers from what it finds.
- Find the right matter by name. There is no project picker in Claude. Name the matter in your question, and LOIS resolves it. If more than one matter could match, LOIS asks which one you mean rather than guessing.
- Pull a specific passage from a document. Ask for the part of a document that covers a particular point, and LOIS returns that section rather than the whole file.
However, the connector has the following restrictions in place:
- The connection is read-only. LOIS cannot create, edit, move, or delete anything in Filevine through this connector. It answers questions and nothing else.
- LOIS has the same access as the user. LOIS only sees the matters and documents the user's Filevine account can already reach, so your firm's existing permissions and security controls stay in place.
- Citations do not open documents. In the LOIS Console, clicking a citation opens the document with the passage highlighted. In Claude you get the answer as text. To see the underlying documents, go to the console.
- Document questions only. Uploading, drafting, workflows, skills, legal research, billing, and cross-matter reporting all stay in the LOIS Console.
- Claude relays the answer. Claude decides when to call LOIS and may add its own wording around what comes back. The grounded part of the response is what LOIS returned.

If you want Claude to do things in Filevine, use the Filevine Claude Connector. If you want Claude to answer a question from the contents of your documents, use the LOIS Claude Connector.
Setup
Adding the connector takes two steps. An organization owner adds it once for the organization, and then each user connects their own Filevine account.
Permission Required
Only an Owner or Primary Owner can add a connector to a Claude organization. On Enterprise plans, a custom role with Manage access to Libraries can also do it. Individual users cannot add it for themselves.
To add the connector, an owner opens Organization settings > Connectors in Claude and adds the URL for their region:
- US:
https://prod-us.lois-connector.filevine.com/mcp - Canada:
https://prod-ca.lois-connector.filevine.ca/mcp
Once the owner has added it, each user connects individually. In Claude desktop or Claude on the web, open Settings > Connectors. Find the LOIS Connector in your organization's list and click to connect. Sign in at the Filevine Identity page, selecting your tenant if prompted, and then review and approve the requested permissions.
If you do not see the LOIS Connector in your list, an owner has not added it to your organization yet.
Manage the Connection
Click the LOIS Connector in Claude's connector list to disconnect it or to adjust tool permissions.
You can also turn the connector on and off for an individual conversation using the plus button, and then Connectors.
Note
The connection follows your Filevine Identity session, which an Account Admin controls in Account Manager > Tenant Configuration. The default is one day, and an admin can extend it to three months.
Use
You can ask LOIS about matter documents the same way you would make any other request in Claude. For inspiration, take a look at the following example prompts.
Tip
For the best results, name the matter in your prompt as it appears in Filevine. Naming it directly is faster than asking LOIS to look it up.
Find and Read
- What's the status of discovery in the Henderson case?
- What do the medical records say about prior injuries on the Larson matter?
- In the Delgado matter, who was at fault according to the police report?
- What are the total medical expenses in the Delgado file?
Analyze Matter Documents
- Summarize the deposition testimony in the Henderson case.
- Using the medical records in the Larson matter, tell me what treatment the plaintiff received and when.
- What does our expert report say about causation in the Delgado matter?
- Show me the section of the deposition where the witness discusses the accident.
Note
As a reminder:
- Claude relays what LOIS returns and may summarize or add to it. If you need to verify an answer against the source document, open the matter in the LOIS Console.
- The connector is read-only. You can ask about documents, but nothing in Filevine changes as a result. To draft, upload, or update records, use the LOIS Console or the Filevine Claude Connector.
