Here, you’ll learn how to chat with LOIS, including how to focus and refine your requests as well as the different types of citation and output LOIS provides.
This article covers building prompts from scratch. For more information about building skills, read LOIS Build.
LOIS Glossary
First, we’ll define some terminology used in the LOIS Console. In the subsequent sections, you’ll see these items used in the context of walkthroughs and examples.
| sidebar | The left side panel in the LOIS Console. The sidebar contains your chat history, the Build option, the New Chat option, and your profile. |
| chat panel | The main piece of the LOIS Console, where you’ll have conversations with LOIS. |
| prompt or input | The text you type or dictate to LOIS. |
| response or output | The text and citations LOIS provides to you. |
| project picker | The Choose a project option, which you can use to select a specific Filevine project. This option allows LOIS to narrow its focus and dig deeper into a single project. |
| refine focus | When a specific project is selected, you can use this option to select only certain project documents for LOIS to focus on. |
| starter prompts | Four prompt types appear below the input area. Click these options to select and enter a pre-written prompt into LOIS. |
| action citation | If it performs an action in Filevine, LOIS will include a citation in its response. Each citation includes the prompt, a brief note on the action, and a link to the item in Filevine. |
| document citation | If LOIS uses project documents, it will include in-line citations of its sources in its response. Click on a citation to open a right side panel, where you can view the source document, with the relevant text highlighted. |
| document editor | If LOIS drafts new content, that contact can be viewed and edited in the document editor. |
1. Open a new chat
In the LOIS Console, you’ll see the main screen—the chat panel—and the sidebar, which will list your chat history. You’ll also see the option to Build here, which allows you to use skills and workflows—learn more.
In the sidebar, you can click New Chat to open a new chat in the chat panel, the main part of the screen.
2. Provide the input and scope
Type your prompt in the input area, or use the microphone icon to dictate your prompt to LOIS.
Scope Selection
Depending on your prompt, you also have options for narrowing the focus of LOIS. Use the Choose a project option if you want to dig deeper into a single project, or look for a specific project’s documents.
If you’ve chosen a project, you’ll see the option to Refine focus. Click this option to view a list of project documents, and select specific project documents to narrow the focus of the response.
For example, if you wanted LOIS to summarize the key counterpoints of a complaint, you could select the complaint and the answer to the complaint from the project documents.
Mode Selection
Select between Project Chat and Work modes. Project Chat mode requires a project to be selected, and is suited for quick case questions. It’s best at looking up info. Work mode operates across projects, and is best suited for deep, focused work that requires LOIS’ full toolkit. Learn more about LOIS’ modes.
Upload Documents
You can also upload documents straight from your device to the prompt for LOIS to use. Click the plus icon in the prompt space and select and upload one or multiple documents.
These documents can then be uploaded to Filevine upon request. For example, ask LOIS to review and file them to the appropriate folders or cases.
- File Size: The current file size limit for an individual document or file is 5 GB
-
File Types: File types are limited to the types that LOIS can read and interact with. Initially, these file types are:
- DOC
- DOCX
- HTML
- RTF
- TXT
- PPTX
- XLSX
- ODS
- CSV
- TSV
- EML
- MSG
- PNG
- JPG/JPEG
- BMP
- JFIF
- TIFF
- Content type: LOIS is able to read and interact with text-based content. Images are usable to the extent that they contain extractable text.
Prompt Enhancement
If you’d like help refining your prompt, you can click the Enhance sparkle icon in the chatbox to have LOIS rewrite the text currently in the composer.
The Enhance option resolves vague references, breaks instructions into clear steps, and surfaces implicit constraints (like tone or audience) without fabricating new requirements.
After enhancement, you can modify, add to, or partially rewrite the result before sending.
After enhancement, the sparkle icon changes to an undo arrow. Click the arrow to restore the original text. The undo option is available until you edit the text, send the message, or start a new message.
3. LOIS Responds
LOIS thinks through how to respond to your prompt. You will see it thinking through different steps and approaches.
Stop the Request
Requests can be stopped by clicking the stop icon in the chat box. You may want to stop a chat if you realize you’ve made a mistake in the request, and don’t want to wait for LOIS to finish the request before correcting or adding to it.
LOIS will let you know that the “run,” or request, has been stopped. If LOIS already took an action, it will let you know and list the actions it took before the request was stopped.
LOIS then provides a response. Depending on the input, LOIS may provide a drafted document, citations to document sources, or citations to the actions it performed in Filevine.
Document Citations
If LOIS includes document citations, you can click on the in-line citation or on Sources at the end of the response to open the list of citations and view the source document, where the reference information is highlighted.
Action Citations
If the response includes action citations, you’ll see the list of actions taken in Filevine. Click Open on an action citation to open the item in Filevine. If there are many actions, you can click View all to view all actions on the right.
Document Editor
If your request involves drafting content—for example, drafting a demand letter—LOIS will draft the content using the document editor. Click on the item in the response to open the document editor, where you can view and edit the content, including basic formatting.
To save or download the document, click the vertical ellipsis menu and choose from the following options:
- copy to clipboard
- print/save as PDF
- download as .docx
- attach to Filevine
Attaching the document to Filevine will save the document as a .docx file to the chosen project. You can find the document in the project’s Docs section, titled LOIS-Console-[name given in LOIS].
Tip
Use the document editor in conjunction with other LOIS products, like LOIS for Word. LOIS can draft a contract in the LOIS Console, and LOIS for Word can refine and check the document.
4. Follow Up
Continue the conversation with LOIS. LOIS may request additional information from you in its response, or you may request further information or action based on the response.
