LOIS has two available modes. Project Chat mode requires a project to be selected, and is suited for quick case questions. It’s best at looking up info. Work mode operates across projects, and is best suited for deep, focused work that requires LOIS’ full toolkit.
Note
"Ask LOIS" or “Chat With Your Case” style capabilities are still there, but this type of prompting for quick, project-specific requests now exists in LOIS’ “Project Chat” mode.
What Each Mode is For
Each mode represents a different way of working with Filevine data.
Project Chat
Project Chat is for quick questions about your case. You can think of it like “Ask LOIS” with a visual update. It searches your case data—documents, notes, calendar, contacts, billing, deadlines—and gives you a direct answer.
Project Chat operates exclusively in one project at a time, so a project must be selected to use this mode. (If you have Project Chat selected as your default mode, LOIS will default to Project Chat as soon as a project is selected.)
Many of LOIS’ tools are not included in Project Chat mode. Document upload, refined focus, skills, cross-document synthesis, document drafting, aggregate reporting queries, billing or invoicing tools, or Legal Research are all tools available only in Work mode.
Work
Work is for deep thinking or focused work. It uses LOIS’ full toolkit, and can search deeply across documents, analyze uploaded files, draft content, run skills, and use structured tools like Legal Research and Chat with Your Opinion. Think of Work mode as the full-powered research and drafting mode.
Selecting a Mode
Set Your Default
You can select your default mode in the Settings modal in LOIS Console.
Note
Project Chat mode requires a project to be selected, so even if you select Project Chat as you default mode, LOIS will default to Work mode until you select a project. Once a project is selected, it will switch.
Choose in Chat
You can adjust the mode in the chat composer wherever you are using LOIS. This selection will override your default mode.
The mode must be selected before you send your chat. Once you’ve begun chatting in one mode, you will need to start a new chat to switch the other. Switching from Project Chat to Work, or vice versa, opens a new chat, and does not carry your conversation over.
