This article discusses how to use the search bar to search for cases, proceedings, transcripts, or exhibits from anywhere in Depositions by Filevine.
When you upload exhibits—such as images or scanned documents—they are searchable immediately via Optical Character Recognition (OCR) technology. Additionally, you can search based on the visual context of the images in your exhibits. For example, searching for “car” will include exhibits containing the picture of a car.
To start, select the search bar at the top of the page, and then enter a name or keyword from the artifact you are looking for.
Filters
Once you enter a search term, the results are displayed in a scrollable list. To the right of each result, the artifact type—case, proceeding, transcript, or exhibit—is displayed. Along the top of the results, you can filter by the desired artifact type.
If you initiated your search from within a case, you also have the option to filter by either All cases or This case. If you’re in the folder for a specific proceeding, you have the additional option to filter by This proceeding.
Tip
To find utterances from a specific participant in a proceeding, like a deponent or opposing counsel attorney, enter their first and last name as your search term.
Semantic Matches
When searching, you can decide whether to include one or both of the following results by expanding the “Shown matches” dropdown:
- Exact keyword matches: as the name suggests, this toggle option includes results that include the specific words or phrases used in your search.
- Semantically related matches: this toggle option includes words with the same meaning as your search terms. For example, searching for “injury” with this setting enabled will include results that mention “broken elbow.”
Additionally, if there is a typo in your search, the results include the closest match to the term you entered.
Note
Semantic matches are not supported when results are filtered by Cases or Proceedings.
Navigate Results
When you select a search result, your experience varies depending on the artifact type.
Selecting a case or proceeding result will take you to the folder for the case or proceeding. Selecting an exhibit result opens the exhibit in a new browser tab.
Selecting a result from a transcript will take you directly to the word or phrase within the transcript. Once there, you can use the left and right arrows in the search bar to navigate to the next matching word or phrase within that transcript.
