The Doc Utility App is part of Filevine’s Docs+ Features.
With the Doc Utility app, users can use the native programs on their devices to edit documents stored in Filevine. Changes automatically sync back to Filevine when the document is saved.
While this functionality is similar to Document Edit-in-Place, there is one key difference: the Doc Utility app is not limited to Microsoft Office files. You can edit virtually any file, as long as you have compatible editing software on your device. This includes PDFs, images, and more.
Download and Install
To install the Doc Utility app, reach out to an Org Admin for the installation file. Once you receive it, open the file and follow the prompted steps to install.
Permission Required
If you are an Org Admin, click the question mark icon at the top right corner of Filevine, and then click Doc Utility App Resources. Select either Download for Windows or Download for Mac to download the installation file. Follow the prompted steps to install the Doc Utility app on your device, or send the installation file to your team member(s) who intend to use the app.
When installing the app on Windows, you may see a “Windows protected your PC” warning message. To proceed with installing the app, select More info > Run anyway.
The Doc Utility app uses the latest version of Electron and is authorized by both Microsoft and Apple. Depending on your organization’s internal policies, you may need to work with your IT department to whitelist the application.
Set Default Programs
When opening files, the Doc Utility app uses your device’s default program for each file type. Before using the Doc Utility app, set your preferred software as the default for the file types you want to edit. For example, if you prefer Adobe for editing PDFs, make sure Adobe is the default program for .pdf files on your device.
Follow the instructions for either Mac or Windows to set your device's default programs.
