A reference field is a type of custom field that will mirror the value of another field. Reference fields allow you to replicate information from one section to another.
Add a Reference Field
Reference fields are added in the Customs Editor, and can be added to any static or collection custom section. In the Customs Editor, open the section where you’d like to place the reference field, and click + Add Field/Widget.
In the Create New Field Template modal, select “Reference Field” from the field type dropdown. Select the field that you want to reference from the dropdown. By default, the reference field’s display name is the same as the referent, but if desired, you can change the display name.
Click Create to add the reference field to the section.
Contingencies
You can also click Advanced Properties to move the field or to add contingencies for the reference field, or you can make other fields contingent on the reference field.
Since reference fields can pull their data from another section, this functionality allows you to effectively create contingent fields across different custom sections.
Which Fields Can be Referenced?
Anything that can be used as a vital can also be referenced with a reference field. This includes all custom fields in static sections, fields in contact cards, deadline chain due and done dates, and project information like the phase and the Org.
Individual fields in specific collection items cannot be referenced. However, you can reference the date of the earliest created collection item, the date of the latest collection item, and the total count of collection items in a collection section. You can also reference highest, lowest and totals from amount fields.
Use a Reference Field
In a project, reference fields are marked by a double arrow icon next to their display name. Click on this icon to display the hover text, which tells you that the field is referencing another. Depending on the referent field type, the hover text may include a link to the referent. This link opens a new tab, open and scrolled to the referent.
